First-Person Shooters (FPS) are shooting games where gameplay occurs through a first-person point of view. Players are unable to see most of its controlled character’s body and equipment, except for their limbs, appendages, such as hands and feet, and the weapon that they are carrying. This camera view allows players to see and experience the game world as if through the eyes of its character, greatly enhancing the game’s immersion. Due to this first person camera view, players virtually always take control of only a single character.

These games tend to be Action focused, with gameplay happening in real time and requiring players to quickly navigate through a hostile environment facing enemies through long-range combat. While these games predominantly feature firearms and other long-range weapons, often there is complimentary close combat available in the form of knives, swords, and other melee weapons, although these are often less reliable.

As these games are a subgenre of Shooters, some expression of shooting is an important focus on these games. Contemporary firearms are often featured in these games, along with other real ranged weapons, such as bows and crossbows, and fantasy weapons, such as magical staffs or spells. A similar genre of games that features most of the same gameplay elements, but instead focus mostly on close combat weapons, is instead categorized as a First-Person Action game.

A growingly popular subgenre of Shooters and that is often featured as FPS games are Hero Shooters. In these games, each playable character has unique special abilities that they can rely on in addition to their weapons. These games often borrow many of the same elements of MOBA games, being predominantly competitive multiplayer team-based games where players are looking to fill particular roles through their special character’s ability in order to assist their team to victory.
