Your Guide to Anime Dere Personality Types

Everyone who has ever read manga, watched anime or played a great Hentai game has been in contact with at least one of the popular types of anime Dere. A “Dere” is a character personality type which comes with some built-in cliches and tropes for the creators to work with. But what are Dere types? What does Yandere mean? Tsundere… what’s that? Let’s jump in and learn about the different popular Dere personality types!

Imagine the fiery redhead Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion who despises Shinji although in her heart she seems to care about him. The scary Monika in Doki Doki Literature Club who is willing to do anything for the main character's affection. How about Runa Yomozuki from Kakegurui. She is a cute and adorable girl that seems so sweet until you realise that she is actually very mean and filled with dark thoughts? Or the cheerful and energetic Usagi Tsukino, leader of the beautiful crew of magical girls in Sailor Moon?

All of these are examples from large popular manga, anime and game franchises which feature different types of Deres with their own unique personalities and temperament. With so many different personalities the question begs to be asked: what makes a Dere character unique?

Anime girls with different dere personality types

Dere comes from the term “Dererere'' in Japanese (デレデレ) which is an onomatopoeia that means to be struck by love. It can also refer to the “awe” feeling you get when you see the person of your dreams in passing. That feeling of a sudden and deep connection with a person.

In the context of manga, anime and Hentai, Dere refers to how the character acts toward their main love interest. In most cases, this is the feelings they share toward the protagonist of the story. Are they joyful when they spot him or her? Do they act rude towards them, but are kind to others? Their personality which is centred around their actions, thoughts and attitude all are very important when describing a Dere-type.

Although the definition is quite straightforward, the types of Dere are not as obvious as you might think! There is no real official count of how many Dere-types exist since new archetypes are often suggested based on new Anime trends. That being said, people tend to agree that there are 5 major types of Deres personalities that are more prominent and popular than others in the otaku culture.

To classify a Dere it’s important to explore their attitude, temperament and more importantly how they act with the character that they love. Let’s dive deep inside the mind of Dere characters as we cover and describe what makes them unique!

Tsundere

Tsundere characters Kura and Rui from hentai games

Tsundere is one of the most popular character archetypes used in media that is inspired by Japanese content.

Picture this, you’re watching a new anime show and the main character compliments one of the girls who then says something along the lines of: “It’s not like I enjoy what you just told me… baka”. They then make a pout face (typical mouth on the side expression) as she or he glances at the side. Congratulations, you are in the mighty presence of a tsundere! But what exactly is a Tsundere and why do they always seem angry and moody?

A Tsundere, also commonly called tsun, is a character who is initially cold or even hostile towards another person, but will gradually show their warm side over time. The term comes from the words “tsuntsun” (ツンツン) in Japanese which refers to someone being grumpy or frustrated. For this reason, Hentai games and anime usually show a relationship between the main character and a Tsundere as a friend-enemy relationship. There will be tension, bad-mouthing and even smacks going around, but nothing too mean or harsh. That's because Tsundere are not bad people per se. They simply hide their true self behind a huge wall of steel in order not to let the other character know their real emotions. Behind the metaphorical wall is a caring and sensitive character that, although she may not admit it to herself, just wants to be cared for and loved.

Upon receiving a compliment or a nice gesture from the other character, their initial reaction is always criticism or to brush it off with a shy expression in order to keep their cool. Once they are alone, they might be starstruck or lovey-dovey at the thought of what just happened. This type of tension creates a mix of interesting and adorable scenes where true love and pride battle it out!

Hentai games may use the concept of friend-enemy and tension through sexual relationships. For instance, a tsun, through a bunch of silly circumstances, may end up in a sexual relationship with the character that they love. This situation might make them unable to maintain their facade properly. As she feels pleasure, she can start to be more sensible or honest about her feelings that leads to often warmful and adorable relationships.

In other cases, the tsun may refuse the advance of the character although she wants to have sex with then leads to a dramatic internal struggle. Some pornographic games even focus on this eternal struggle by using BDSM notions like the Tsun being submissive as an act to break her emotional barrier and show her real feelings. Other games may have the Tsun keep her abusive self during intercourse by having her be dominant toward their love interest!

Multiple games on Nutaku include Tsundere characters which you can seduce and build a relationship with. An interesting game with a tsun lead is Tsundere Idol: My Personal M-Pet which follows the story of Kota a university student and Rui a popular idol as they are both forced in a special relationship of sadomasochism with a power struggle and friendly rivalry. SF Girls a free-to-play hentai game features a popular Tsundere character called Kura which has a fun bratty attitude and enjoys bad-mouthing the main character.

Yandere

The second most popular type of Dere, and clearly one of the scariest, is a Yandere. Imagine you are in school telling a joke to one of your cute friends and as she laughs, you feel something creepy. A cold shiver down your spine. As you turn around, you notice that another person in your class is staring at you with dead eyes and a smile that gives you goosebumps. Yikes, you know it, this is one of them… a Yandere (queue in dramatic music).

What is a Yandere? These characters are obsessive and completely driven by their admiration, love and devotion for another character that they will do anything for them. Although this may sound nice, they will do this to the point that it is excessive and maddening.

They are lovesick characters, hence the name Yandere which is derived from the Japanese word Yanderu meaning “to be sick”. They can’t remove the thought that they should be with the one that they love at all cost, even if the person does not agree to this. Hurting others, themself or even the one person they cherish is all on the line if it can bring them closer to being with them. Because of this bizarre yet frightening attitude, they are often categorised as emotionally unstable and twisted. They also feature a very unique facial expression that showcases their obsessiveness. During their obsessive moment, they grab their face with both hands and stare at the character with a disturbing smile and lovesick eyes.

These types of characters are very popular in manga, anime, and games. There isn’t usually room for more than one of these characters in a series. Hentai games with Yandere characters bring a unique aspect to the personality type, as unlike with all-ages manga and anime, we can explore the sexual nature of a Yandere character. They usually have them as the dominant partner during sexual activities. They may playfully lead the character to have sex with them as the ultimate form of satisfaction since at this exact moment they are their complete centre of attention.

Yandere can also be associated with rope play or other forms of binding-based sex, normally done in a consensual form with their love interest. This is because Yandere crave control and total attention of their partner. Using these methods can sexually control a submissive partner.

Certain hentai may also reverse the roles leaving the partner in total control. Role-reversal is a way for a character to take back control from a Yandere!

Nutaku features multiple games with classic Yandere characters. Crush Crush: Moist & Uncensored, a free dating sim that features Ayano who happens to be the main character of Yandere Simulator. Ayano was added to Crush Crush during a cross-promotional event. She has an obsession with the main character and as you progress your relationship with her you will see that she can be quite scary.

My neighbour is a Yandere Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 are also two popular games where the main protagonist's love interest is a lovesick obsessive character who only wants to be your centre of attention at all cost.

Dandere

Dandere character Kitamikado Ritsuko from Princess Evangile

The word Dandere uses the Japanese prefix “Dan” from the word “danmari” which means “silence.” As the word implies, Danderes can easily be recognized as they are the classic shy and silent archetype. They are characters that you will find sitting in the last row of a classroom being silent and unnoticeable. Normally very shy, they fear to speak to others and when they do so they are particularly awkward and have a weird way of displaying their emotions.

This changes once they meet the character that they love. In their presence, they become a totally different person. They might suddenly be very energetic and even very talkative! Finding the right person makes the Dandere open her heart and show their true self to the one they care about.

In a sense, they are kind of the opposite of a Tsundere where the character hides their true self in the presence of the one they love. Instead, they will show their full self for better or worse to their love interest. They are very loyal and will do anything in their power to help and protect the love they have for the other character.

Though not as popular in hentai as they are in anime and manga, you will still see Dandere characters popup in adult content. Since they are very devoted character, sexual scenes in hentai featuring Dandere will be very wholesome and adorable. She or he may try to do anything for the other character in order to please them. Because they are very romantically centred characters, Hentai games featuring Dandere are therefore a bit more wholesome than others. Princess Evangile, an adorable slice of life, is one of those games with a romantic story that features a cute bookworm Dandere called Kitamikado Ritsuko. Fureraba ~Friend to Lover~ DELUXE EDITION also focuses on Dandere if you choose Misaki’s route. She will give you plenty of reasons as to why Dandere are some of the most adorable characters to fall in love with!

Deredere

Deredere characters Erica and Angela from Hentai games

What is a Deredere? The term “Dere” is an abbreviation for the Japanese word “Deredere”, which is coincidentally the name of the current Dere personality. Deredere can be translated to the English word “Lovey-Dovey” and does not have a combination of wording like other Deres!

As the name implies they are the embodiments of a little ray of sunshine and are very affectionate. They are always optimistic, resilient and manage to light up a room with one sentence. It’s that annoying friend who always seems to be able to find the positive in things when nothing seems to be going their way (and let's be realistic, that is the perfect definition of every main shonen protagonist).

Their relationship with the one they love is very positive and charming. They are people pleasers, but also always seem to be able to speak their mind positively. They will therefore listen to the main character and care for them with small attention and remarks, but also give them smart and logical advice when they need it. For instance, one popular and quite famous mark of affection that Derederes employs is the classic lap pillow. They let their love interest lay on their laps while they play with their hair and make small conversation.

What sets them apart from other Dere types is the fact that they won’t hide their emotions toward the main character. Showing affection is not something strange for them, on the contrary that's what they are good for. This form of honesty can also be demeaning to them since they may be a little naive towards others' feelings. That is because they always assume the best in others even when they shouldn’t. It’s probably why they are often the first people that lose in battle royal manga and anime.

Derederes are surprisingly quite popular in Hentai games as they tend not to avoid sexuality like many other Deres. Instead they focus on the evolution of the relationships between the characters. Attack On Moe H is a free-to-play hentai game which features a vast cast of different types of Deres. Some of them are adorable Derederes ready to confess their love to the main character!

Succubus Waifu is another game which features a very adorable Deredere as the main love interest of the protagonist. Erica is willing to do anything in her ability to make John relieve his stress and have a better day.

Finally, Project QT features multiple types of Dere characters of all kinds just like our current one of interest. Angela and Iris are two examples of adorable and fun Deredere characters you can recruit for your team and unlock various lewd h-scenes with them!

Kuudere

Kuudere character Tamaki Hanabi from I Am Magicami DX

The last Dere-type we will cover in our rundown of the most popular Dere personalities is similar to a Dandere but features their very unique range of expression and motivation.

Kuudere are characters who are initially cold and aloof, but gradually warm up to the protagonist and become more caring over time. The name comes from the word “Kuuru '' in Japanese, which is a katakanazation for the English word cool. The translation works quite well because Kuudere are considered expressionless, calm in all situations and overall pretty badass. Probably why this type of Dere never stares at explosions, they simply walk away decisively in slow motion 😎. They can speak properly and are not as awkward socially as Dandere, but their speech tends to be more monotone and stern.

Regarding their love interest, Kuudere may not be mean or bad mouth others upon meeting them but they will remain distant and keep a facade around them. Compared to Dandere, Kuudere will still remain somewhat expressionless and calm even after their relationship evolves. This might be because they have been through hardship or their emotions have simply been put to the side. Nevertheless, after their feelings settle in, they still become one of the most loyal Dere you can find!

Kuudere is not a type of Dere that you will sleep with on the first night although, in some cases, they may just want to have fun. Instead, gradually by knowing the other character, the Kuudere will become more connected with them. This may then change drastically how they physically react to the character! Upon getting closer to the one they love, Kuudere will do anything for them, let it be physical and emotional.

This is also apparent during intercourse. Since they are generally emotionless, sexual relationships are very unique. They might remain expressionless although you can see that they are enjoying what their love interest is doing. In other cases, they may instead fully change how they usually react and become very sensitive because of the pleasure. This weird mix of emotion and expression makes Kuudere some very interesting characters with a lot of depth and their stories are very memorable!

Vel, a beautiful grim reaper in The Grim Reaper who Reaped my Heart! Fits the definition of a Kuudere perfectly! She is expressionless and distant, but with each exchange with the protagonist you can see that she is rather interested in him and even that she cares for him. Tamaki Hanabi, a strong and emotionless magical girl from I Am Magicami DX, is also a Kuudere. Even during sexual relationship with Tobio she remains expressionless with a cold stoic expression, although sometimes the intensity of the pleasure is too much for her and she can’t keep her usual facade.

This was a rundown of the most popular types of Deres and their personalities! As you saw, Nutaku features multiple games with popular Dere type for you to dive in and discover.
